Three ways to make your van work harder

Whether it is a campervan for the weekend or a mobile workshop for every weekday, choose a precision cut kit to install yourself or have Nomado build it around your exact needs.

Campervan conversions

Choose your layout

Three practical starting points for Toyota HiAce conversions. Each can be supplied as a kit or built and installed by our Auckland team.

Coastline Lounge layout — twin birch plywood benches with sand cushions, a removable centre table and compact galley inside a Toyota HiAce at the coast

Coastline Lounge

Best for couples who value indoor living.

Two rear benches, a removable dining table and compact galley create a relaxed space by day. At night, the lounge converts to a wide double bed.

Trail Garage layout — fixed double bed above a pull-out rear tray holding a mountain bike, with a birch plywood galley opposite, in a Toyota HiAce

Trail Garage

Best for active weekends and longer trips.

A fixed lengthways double bed sits above a secure rear garage for bikes, boards and outdoor gear. Full galley and practical storage make it ready for extended travel.

Weekender Flex layout — two opposing plywood benches, a removable centre table and compact galley in a Toyota HiAce campervan kit at a New Zealand beach

Weekender Flex

Best for flexible DIY use.

Twin benches, a removable table and compact galley create a simple day space. The benches can become two single beds or combine into a double.

Every layout is confirmed against your exact van before anything is cut. Not sure which suits you? Tell us how you travel and we will recommend one.

Why Nomado

A manufacturer, not a middleman

Nomado has been renting, selling and servicing campervans and motorhomes in New Zealand since 2020, and is the exclusive New Zealand distributor for Malibu of Germany and Wingamm of Italy. Every kit and every fit out is drawn and cut by us.

European design pedigree

We spend our days inside Malibu and Wingamm interiors. That is the benchmark our own cabinetry is drawn and finished to — tight tolerances and flush edges, not rough ply.

Cut in Auckland

Designed and CNC-cut here, so a kit can be machined for your exact van and a spare panel does not mean waiting on a container.

Proven by our own fleet

We have run campervans as rentals for years. We know which layouts frustrate people and which components fail — so we do not specify those.

Support after handover

Advice on certification, rental management if you want your van to earn while it is parked, and a team you can still phone next season.

The rules changed

Self-containment: what you need to know

If you intend to freedom camp in New Zealand, your campervan needs a green self-containment warrant. Blue warrants expired on 7 June 2026 and are no longer recognised on public land, so every vehicle now needs certification under the current system.

The requirement that catches most people out is the toilet. A green warrant needs a toilet permanently fixed to the vehicle and usable inside it — a portable toilet does not qualify, even if you bolt it down. That is a cabinetry problem, which is precisely what we build.

Our layouts are designed for certification

Fixed toilet, plumbed fresh and grey water, sink, ventilation and sealed rubbish storage are all accounted for. We cannot issue the certificate — that comes from an authority appointed by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board — but we will tell you exactly what is still outstanding before you book an inspection.

The short version

Nomado Conversions, in brief

What does Nomado Conversions do?

We design, manufacture and install campervan interiors and commercial van fit outs for small vans — principally the Toyota HiAce — from a workshop in Auckland, New Zealand.

What are the three routes?

A precision-cut flat-pack kit you install yourself, a complete campervan conversion built in Auckland, or a commercial mobile workshop fit out.

Which vans do you convert?

Toyota HiAce, Regius and Granvia, Nissan NV350 and Caravan, plus people movers such as the Alphard, Elgrand and LDV G10.

What does it cost?

Price on enquiry. Cost depends almost entirely on scope, so we quote against a drawn layout rather than a headline figure.

Where we are

Based in Auckland, shipping New Zealand wide

Our workshop is in Auckland, which is where full conversions and commercial fit outs are built and where DIY kits can be collected. If you are in Auckland you are welcome to come and see the cabinetry in person before you commit to anything — we would rather you did.

For a flat-pack conversion kit, distance is not an obstacle. Kits are flat-packed specifically so they freight economically, and we send them anywhere in New Zealand — Whangarei to Invercargill, both islands.

For a full conversion or a commercial fit out, your van needs to be with us. Plenty of customers drive up from Waikato and Bay of Plenty, drop the van off and collect it finished.

Service area

  • Auckland — workshop, full conversions, commercial fit outs, kit collection
  • Upper North Island — Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Northland: builds by arrangement
  • Nationwide — DIY and modular commercial kits freighted to any NZ address
  • South Island — kits shipped; full builds by arrangement

Common questions

Campervan conversion FAQ

How much does a campervan conversion cost in New Zealand?

It depends entirely on which route you take and how far you want to go. A DIY cabinetry kit is the most affordable way in; a full conversion with water, 12V, heating and self-containment costs considerably more. We quote against a layout we have drawn for your van rather than posting a headline number that turns out to exclude half of what you need. Tell us what you are picturing and you will get a realistic range early in the conversation.

Can a Toyota HiAce be converted into a self-contained campervan?

Yes, and it is the most common conversion in New Zealand. A HiAce has enough length for a full-width double bed across the back, a galley and a fixed cassette toilet, which is what self-containment certification now requires. All three of our layouts are designed around exactly that. See our guide to self-containment certification for what an inspection looks for.

Do you fit out work vans as well as campervans?

Yes. Alongside campervans we design and manufacture mobile workshop fit outs for electricians, plumbers, builders, technicians and service businesses — pull-out drawers, modular shelving, pipe and ladder storage, raised floors and workbenches. Available as a modular kit or a complete installed fit out.

Do you convert vans other than the HiAce?

Yes. The Nissan NV350 and Caravan are close cousins of the HiAce and use the same layouts. We also work with the Toyota Regius, Granvia and Alphard, Nissan Elgrand and LDV G10. Send us the make, model, year and wheelbase and we will tell you honestly whether it is a good fit.

Where are you based?

Auckland. Full conversions and commercial fit outs are built in our workshop here, and DIY kits can be collected in person. Kits are flat-packed to freight economically, so we ship them anywhere in New Zealand.

How long does a conversion take?

A DIY kit goes together in a few hours to a weekend, depending on your confidence with tools. A full conversion or commercial fit out is a scheduled workshop build — we give you a real date when we quote rather than an optimistic one, and tell you early if it moves.
